Why Are Chateaux Cheap in France?
Chateaux are cheap in France because they are hard to maintain. Most French castles are in the French countryside, making them not very accessible. There is usually a small local village nearby, however, the manpower that it takes to maintain a castle is not available.
It is also very difficult to make any changes to a castle even after you buy it because they are so old (some are even from the Middle Ages!) You will have to get permission for every little change that you make to the building which requires a lot of time and money.
