Who Owns Maui Chocolate?

Dr. Gunars Valkirs, a former biotech scientist and a long-time fruit tree grower in San Diego, was captivated by the idea of cultivating cacao outside Hawaii when he leased farmland there in 2013.

His allure with this unique opportunity grew stronger as he decided to experiment on his own land located in Kapalua, where UH Manoa conducted their field trials trying to determine suitable growing conditions for cacao almost 10 years ago.

Gunars was no stranger to the art of wine-making and had initially considered it as a potential second career.

He quickly came to realize, however, that chocolate-making has several similarities with winemaking too—not least in that they pair perfectly together! As such, he welcomed the opportunity for him to pursue his interest in both pursuits simultaneously.
