Is There Uber in France? What to Know Before Your Trip

Is there Uber in France? Yes, there is Uber in France! It’s not available in every city, but you can use it in most major cities in France.

What Cities in France Have Uber?

Below is a list of major cities in France that have Uber:

  • Bordeaux
  • Grenoble
  • Lyon
  • Marseille
  • Montpellier
  • Nice
  • Paris
  • Strasbourg
  • Menton
  • Avignon
  • Grenoble
  • Toulon
  • Toulouse
  • etc.

Although many cities have Uber (like my city, Nice) I don’t use it very often and I wouldn’t recommend it, since public transport is so good. Like with the trip below, it would have cost us $4 USD with public transport, but it cost us $36 with Uber.

Should You Use Uber in France?

Although you’ll find Uber in most areas of France, should you be using it? France has some of the best public transportation in Europe at an affordable price.

So here is when you should and shouldn’t use Uber in France:

Uber in France Can Be Expensive, But Sometimes It’s Not

Obviously, taking an Uber is going to be more expensive than taking public transportation.

However, just because it is more expensive in most cases, doesn’t mean that it always is more expensive.

For example, I was traveling Paris with my extended family and we needed to get back to the airport from our Airbnb.

We were 6 people in total, plus all our luggage. Adding up the costs, we could take the metro and then the TER train to get to the CDG airport for around 75 euros total.

After looking at how much luggage we’d have to drag around, we decided to open up the Uber app just to see how much it would cost.

Surprisingly, Uber was the same price. We weren’t traveling during high-trafficked hours and the prices were pretty low.

So instead of trekking as a family of 6 through metro stations and train stations, we hopped in a van that took us straight to the airport.

Although Uber is quite expensive in the US, I have found that it’s pretty reasonable in France.

Use Uber When Getting Home From a Bar

If you are coming home from a bar in France then go ahead and use an Uber. If you are drunk then the last thing you want to do is get on a bus and then walk 5 minutes to your house.

This makes it so you are picked up at the bar and brought directly to your house.

If You Need Faster Transport

If you need to get somewhere quick then Uber is the way to go. Public transport can be slow or late so if you need to get to the airport or are late for a meeting then you should probably take an Uber.

When Public Transport is On Strike

This happens a lot more often than you would think it does. On the first day that we arrived in France, we had everything planned out and were ready to hop on the tram that would drop us off right at our apartment.

When we got to the tram and waited there for about 30 minutes we finally asked someone what was going on they told us that the public transport workers had been on strike for almost a week!

We didn’t have a SIM card for France yet and didn’t have Uber downloaded on our phones (because we try to never use it) so we had to take a taxi. Huge mistake.

The taxi ended up costing us almost $60 for a 20-minute ride! Literally, every time we have taken a taxi anywhere in the world we have been ripped off.

It’s gotten to the point that if you said that the taxi is free we wouldn’t do it.

When Ordering Food on Uber Eats

Another time that you could use Uber in France is when you are ordering food.

Yes, they do have Uber Eats in France as well as Uber.

When it comes to ordering food in France, Uber Eats and Deliveroo are the best apps. They have the most options and are easy to use.
